In a post-match analysis session following Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) historic victory against Mumbai Indians (MI) on May 3, Friday, Venkatesh Iyer and Andre Russell engaged in a deep discussion regarding a critical run-out goof-up. KKR CEO Venky Mysore and MI’s Suryakumar Yadav were also present during the fun chat.

The run-out incident

The pivotal moment occurred during the last ball of the 17th over when Venkatesh attempted a reverse-sweep against Hardik Pandya‘s delivery, only to find a fielder stationed at short-third man. As Venkatesh focused on the ball, Russell initiated a run without proper communication. Venkatesh, noticing Russell’s movement at the last moment, attempted to send him back, but it was too late as Pandya collected the ball swiftly and executed the run-out, dismissing Russell at 7 runs.

Insights from the analysis: justification and banter

KKR released a special video showcasing the players, along with coach Chandrakant Pandit, engaging in a detailed discussion regarding the run-out incident. In the video, Russell explained Venkatesh’s sudden turn after hitting the shot, while Venkatesh justified his delayed response due to his back being turned.

Mr Mysore remarked on Venkatesh’s posture post-shot, indicating that he was almost on his knees, with Suryakumar adding humor by suggesting Venkatesh had turned significantly. Venkatesh, in Hindi, humorously commented on Russell’s uncharacteristic speed during the run, prompting playful banter between him and Suryakumar.
