Barbados Royals have appointed South African batter David Miller as captain for the 2022 edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). He will be replacing Windies all-rounder Jason Holder, who had been at the helm for the last couple of seasons.

Miller, who returns to the CPL for the first time in three seasons having last represented Jamaica Tallawahs in 2018 and St Lucia Zouks in 2016, will now be working closely with head coach Trevor Penney and Royals’ Director of Cricket Kumar Sangakkara.

“During my time at the Royals in the IPL, I always felt very valued and have been able to establish a deep connection with the team. It is an exciting time for me to come to the Barbados Royals, and a privilege to have been appointed as the Captain. It is a team that has an abundance of young and experienced talent from the Caribbean and I am looking forward to working with the entire group to get down to achieving our objectives for the 2022 season,” said Miller in his official statement.

The swashbuckling finisher has scored 332 runs in 15 innings at a strike rate of 146.90 in the tournament.

Meanwhile, Barbados Royals will go into the season high on confidence, having retained their core group which includes the likes of Jason Holder, Kyle Mayers, Oshane Thomas, Obed McCoy, Hayden Walsh, Devon Thomas and Nyeem Young. They also snapped experienced T20 players like Miller, Quinton de Kock, Mujeeb ur Rahman, Azam Khan and Corbin Bosch at the CPL 2022 draft earlier this month.

The 10th season of CPL will be played from August 31 to September 30, with Royals starting their campaign against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots on September 1.
