Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim demonstrated his exceptional fielding skills with a sharp and clinical direct hit to dismiss Nicholas Kirton during the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 clash against Canada. The batter was caught well short of his crease, highlighting a pivotal moment in the match at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday (June 11). Imad’s quick reflexes and precision in the field were crucial in shifting the momentum in Pakistan’s favour.

Pakistan asserts control

Pakistan gradually asserted control over the contest following a bright start by Canada. Despite an initial push, Canada finished the powerplay at 30/2, with runs needed quickly to build a competitive total. The Canadian side looked to capitalize on this start, but Pakistan’s fielding and bowling remained tight. Following early breakthroughs by Mohammad Amir and Shaheen Afridi, Pakistan continued to maintain their grip on the game.

Imad Wasim’s brilliant run-out

Aaron Johnson began the middle-overs phase on a positive note, as Haris Rauf conceded 13 runs off his first five deliveries, putting Pakistan under some pressure. On the last ball, Johnson stroked the ball towards cover, initiating a quick single. What followed was utter confusion, as Kirton was stranded midway. Attempting to scramble back to the crease at the bowler’s end, Kirton found himself well short, thanks to Imad’s direct hit. With only a couple of stumps to aim at, Imad’s precise throw hit the bull’s eye, resulting in a critical run-out that further dented Canada’s innings.

Here’s the video:

Canada’s resilience and Pakistan’s comeback

Despite the setback of losing Kirton, who had previously scored a match-winning 49 against Ireland, Canada showed resilience. Johnson’s half-century pushed Pakistan’s bowlers on the backfoot on a tricky New York pitch. Nonetheless, Pakistan made a strong comeback, eventually dismissing Canada for 104 runs in their allotted 20 overs

Pakistan’s steady chase

In reply, Pakistan’s chase began with the early fall of opener Saim Ayub. However, the experienced duo of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan stabilized the innings, adding a crucial 63-run partnership for the second wicket. After Babar’s dismissal, Fakhar Zaman fell cheaply, but Rizwan’s composed run-a-ball 53 guided Pakistan home in this must-win match, ensuring they stayed alive in the tournament.
