In a thrilling showdown in ILT20 UAE 2024 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Sikandar Raza played the role of the hero for Dubai Capitals. His spectacular performance included a last-ball six, helping Capitals in registering a remarkable five-wicket victory against Desert Vipers on Friday, February 9.

Desert Vipers’ solid start

Sent in to bat first by the Capitals skipper Sam Billings, the Vipers made an impressive start, forging a 66-run partnership in 4.2 overs with openers Alex Hales and Philip Salt. This partnership, managed in just four overs, saw its end with Salt’s departure in the fifth over due to Roelof van der Merwe. By the conclusion of the powerplay, Vipers reached 80/1, anchored by Daniel Lawerence and Hales.

However, van der Merwe claimed his second breakthrough in the ninth over by dismissing Lawrence. Olly Stone‘s effective bowling further controlled the Vipers’ onslaught, accounting for Hales and Colin Munro as the scorecard read 118/4 in 11.3 overs. The Vipers faced challenges in the middle overs, struggling to generate big hits and witnessing a cascade of wickets. With Sam Curran and Adam Hose dismissed, the Vipers concluded their innings with a score of 171/7 in 20 overs

Dubai Capitals’ top-order woes

Chasing a target of 172, the Capitals faced early setbacks with the Vipers’ bowlers showing determination. Curran and Mohammad Amir struck early blows, leaving the Capitals at 38/3 by the end of the powerplay. Despite the collapse, Sikandar Raza and Billings stitched a crucial 79-run partnership, bringing the Capitals to 111/3 in 14 overs. However, the Vipers found a breakthrough with Billings’ wicket in the 15th over.

With Raza and Dasun Shanaka at the crease, Dubai Capitals needed 13 runs off the last over. Raza showcased nerves of steel, absorbing the pressure and delivering a stunning finish. Requiring six runs off the last ball, Raza held his composure and smashed a well-timed six, securing a sensational last-ball victory. Ali Naseer‘s delivery was perfectly in Raza’s hitting zone, and he dispatched it over the long-off fielder for a maximum.

Raza’s heroics in this match added to his impressive performance in ILT20 2024. He is currently the second-highest scorer for the Capitals, amassing 263 runs at an average of 37.57 across nine games. Raza’s contribution has been pivotal, making him the standout performer in the Capitals’ batting lineup.
